NZTA assessments for disqualified drivers

Te Piki Oranga is registered as an alcohol and drug assessment centre with Waka Kotahi / NZ Transport Agency (NZTA).

This means we can assess your eligibility to have your disqualification removed, as a first step towards reinstating your driver licence.

Steps in the process

  1. You cannot be assessed until at least one year and one day (ie, 366 days) have passed since your conviction. You are, however, encouraged to make contact with us before this time to discuss what is required of you.

  2. The assessment process includes:

    • a comprehensive alcohol and drug and alcohol assessment

    • blood and urine drug screening

    • assessment of your participation in alcohol and drug education programmes, treatment or therapy.

  3. Information for the assessment is gatheredby talking with you, talking with others who know you, and looking at ways in which alcohol and/or drugs have affected your health and behaviour.

  4. Your first assessment is paid for by NZTA.If you fail to complete the process or fail your assessment you may have to pay for the next one.

  5. If your assessor decides that you are ready to have your licence reinstated, your next step is an appointment with an NZTA Medical Officer (a qualified doctor) who determines whether you are fit to drive. To make this decision they will give you a medical examination, review screening results and consider all factors that determine your suitability to drive.

  6. If the NZTA Medical Officer declares that you are fit to drive, they will send a report to the NZTA licencing team who will send you a letter within a few weeks. You are not eligible to drive until you have completed the required tasks described in the letter.

  7. If the Medical Officer declares that you are still unfit to drive, you will be told what you need to do next.
