About this service

  • The service aims to:

    • increase the number of children and their whānau living in warm, dry and safer homes.

    • reduce the number of children needing medical care caused by unhealthy homes.

Healthy homes kaimahi work with whānau to:

    • look at issues in the home that cause mould, condensation and draughts

    • equip their home with safety devices for young tamariki

    • offer support with any tenancy needs

    • improve the functionality of crowded living situations

  • The Healthy Homes Initiative was established in 2013 by Health New Zealand / Te Whatu Ora.

Originally available only to whānau in some regions, it was expanded to a nationwide service in 2022 after an evaluation of the first three years of the service showed that:

    • the number of Healthy Homes service users needing hospital care was reduced by 19.8 percent

    • that when whānau did need hospital care, their illness was less severe and their time in hospital was shorter
