Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS)

Clinical and non-clinical care for young people and their whānau – from birth to age 18.

Introduction

This is a mana-enhancing service for kōhungahunga (infants), tamariki and rangatahi up to age 18, and their whānau.

Our mental health clinicians take a kaupapa Māori strengths-based approach to prevention, assessment and diagnosis, treatment and therapy.

About this service

  • Our CAMHS kaimahi include mental health nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, pūkenga manaaki (whānau navigators) and allied health professionals.

    • access to specialist assessment and diagnosis

    • medication monitoring

    • psychotherapies

    • monitoring of symptoms and regular review of your progress and treatment

    • early intervention and health maintenance

    • relapse prevention and problem prevention

    • promotion of good mental health

  • Each young person in our care will have their own treatment plan made with whānau input where possible.

    Some plans might involve referral to, or co-ordination with, agencies and service providers such as:

    • Ministry of Education

    • Ministry of Social Development

    • Oranga Tamariki

    • Supporting Families

    • Strengthening Families

    • Schools

Equine therapy (working with horses) has proven benefits for mental wellbeing.

Whakaurunga paearu | How to access

Your family doctor (GP) or secondary healthcare (eg hospital) specialist can refer you.

All referrals will go to Health New Zealand / Te Whatu Ora Nelson Marlborough.

If your referral is accepted, you then choose to be seen by either our Te Piki Oranga CAMHS team or a Health New Zealand /Te Whatu Ora CAMHS team.
