That’s Us, Wāhine Mā

Pūkenga Manaaki Janet Carey welcomes wāhine to Ukaipō.

‍’Whitiki taua… that’s us, wāhine mā’ is about standing together, supporting one another and looking after our hauora.

It is also our call to action for wāhine who are due their breast screening appointments.

Te Piki Oranga supports wāhine to complete their screening all year-round and in May we hosted the mobile screening service at Ukaipō, Rangitāne Cultural Centre in Wairau / Blenheim.

By offering women screening in a community setting, and a Māori setting, we could provide a kaupapa Māori approach that is about manaakitanga, prevention, and taking time for yourself. For two of the days, extended services were also available on-site, including cervical screening, immunisations, health checks, rongoā, hearing tests and hauora support.

Wāhine were encouraged to get those health checks ticked off the list in a beautiful, caring environment, and to bring a whānau member or a friend. Tamariki were also supervised and entertained while their māmā had their mammmogram or other hauora appointment.

‍Breast screening is free for wāhine Māori and Pacific women aged 45-74.

Bookings are essential and Kaye MacDonald will work with you to make it happen. Text or call her on: 027 836 6017 or phone 0800 270 200.
