  • Te Piki Oranga is seeking compassionate and culturally grounded Kaimahi to support our Needle Exchange Programme (NEP) in Nelson. This is a unique opportunity to provide mana-enhancing harm reduction services to whānau who use drugs, through a kaupapa Māori lens.


Mō te tūranga mahi | About this role

As a Kaimahi NEP, you will be the face of our needle exchange service—dispensing sterile injecting equipment, offering non-judgemental harm reduction advice, and supporting whānau with information around safer use, health, and wellbeing. This frontline role is about building trust and supporting positive change in people’s lives. Flexible in the delivery days and hours, supporting two or possibly three part time positions on a one-year fixed term basis.

Ngā kawenga matua | Key Responsibilities

  • Provide safe, respectful, and non-judgemental support to all who access the service

  • Distribute sterile injecting equipment and ensure accurate data recording

  • Offer education on safer injecting, overdose prevention, blood-borne viruses, and health referrals

  • Work collaboratively with local health providers, council, and national networks

  • Promote and uphold kaupapa Māori values in all interactions

  • Deliver or arrange delivery of kits for whānau who cannot access the site

  • Participate in team meetings, training, and professional development

  • Maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment

We are looking for someone who is:

  • Whānau-focused – able to connect authentically and uphold the mana of all whānau

  • Culturally competent – familiar with or open to working within a kaupapa Māori framework

  • Experienced – ideally with lived experience or knowledge in harm reduction, addiction, or working with People Who Inject Drugs (PWID)

  • Reliable and honest – you act with integrity and compassion at all times

  • Organised and adaptable – can manage time well, work independently, and respond to changing needs

  • Community-minded – willing to work collaboratively and represent Te Piki Oranga positively

A current driver’s license is required.

Mō te tūranga mahi | About this role

We’re seeking a qualified, registered Social Worker who can bring both professional skill as well as the effective coordination of social services support that are responsive to the needs of whānau. This is a permanent full-time position, delivered from our hub in Wairau
As a Whānau Kaimahi-a-Iwi, you’ll:

  • Work directly with Māori whānau to assess needs, develop whānau plans, and connect them to social and health services

  • Provide culturally safe and mana-enhancing support and advocacy

  • Facilitate access to emergency housing, mental health support, child protection, and more

  • Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team including nurses, lactation consultants, and other kaimahi

  • Promote whānau wellbeing through education, outreach, and community engagement

  • Maintain accurate documentation and uphold professional and cultural standards


Mōu | About you

You will have:

  • A recognised Social Work qualification and current SWRB registration

  • Experience working in Māori, iwi, or kaupapa Māori settings

  • Strong understanding of child protection, family violence, and community social services

  • Ability to assess risk and build responsive, effective whānau plans

  • Experience working with health or social service organisations

  • High cultural competency and willingness to continue developing in Te Ao Māori

  • Commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi in practice

  • Full NZ driver’s license

Desirable but not essential:

  • Proficiency in Te Reo Māori me ōna tikanga

  • Knowledge of Māori models of health (e.g. Whānau Ora, Te Whare Tapa Whā)

  • Experience with Client Management Systems (e.g. Indici)

To be effective in this role you will be culturally aware and mindful of the complexities with working in a Māori health organisation. Highly communicative and able to appraise, develop and provide guidance to all kaimahi across the organisation. Empathetic to the challenges whānau face and bring a non-judgemental solution focused approach to your mahi. Demonstrate success in aligning personal practice with the visions, goals, policies, and tikanga of Te Piki Oranga and their service delivery.

Our ideal candidates will have:

  • A degree in Human Resource Management (preferred).

  • 5–10 years’ HR experience, ideally within a Māori organisation.

  • Strong knowledge of NZ employment law and workforce planning.

  • Proven ability to build relationships, influence, and mentor.

  • Cultural competency and a commitment to kaupapa Māori values.

  • Full driver’s license.

Ngā pūkenga ka whai koe | Skills and Experience

  • A relevant tertiary qualification in health or an allied health field.

  • Current registration as a mental health practitioner.

  • A solid understanding of mental health conditions, interventions, and best practices.

  • Experience working with tamariki, rangatahi, and whānau in a mental health setting.

  • Strong relationships with key stakeholders in the health and social services sector.

  • Proficiency in report writing and client management systems (INDICI experience is a plus).

As a Kaupapa Māori Counsellor, you will provide short term counselling and wellbeing support to whānau experiencing emotional, mental, or social challenges. Your mahi will be deeply rooted in Māori models of health, such as Te Whare Tapa Whā, Te Wheke, Te Pae Mahutonga, and Pōwhiri frameworks.
You will work within a whānau-centred, values-based service that prioritises cultural safety, whakawhanaungatanga, and holistic healing. Your role is not just to counsel, but to walk alongside whānau as they rediscover their strength, identity, and resilience


Key Responsibilites:

  • Provide therapeutic support that is culturally responsive and grounded in tikanga

  • Conduct holistic whānau ora and cultural assessments that reflect the full spectrum of wellbeing

  • Maintain culturally safe practice and uphold tikanga Māori values in all mahi

  • Co-create intervention plans that uplift mana and mauri

  • Promote and maintain culturally safe practice across your mahi

  • Collaborate with external providers including Te Whatu Ora, CAMHS/AOD, and iwi-based health services

  • Maintain accurate documentation and reporting in line with funder and legislative requirements


Mōu | About you

You are someone who brings aroha, insight, and cultural integrity to your practice. You understand that healing is relational, and that whānau ora is achieved through connection, empowerment, and respect.
You will have:

  • Current registration as a counsellor

  • Tertiary qualification in counselling, health, or allied health

  • Ideally some experience working in mental health and/or tikanga Māori settings

  • Knowledge of Māori models of health and cultural safety

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence

  • Full NZ driver’s licence and willingness to travel across the region

Desirable:

  • Experience in a tikanga Māori organisation

  • Experience working alongside lived experience practitioners and whānau voice
